China Launches Third Environmental Monitoring Satellite

Besides allowing China to monitor pollution and natural disasters, the trio of satellites will be used in making decisions about deploying emergency aid and reconstruction.

China successfully launched the Huanjing-1C satellite on Nov. 19, the Xinhua news agency reported. Its launch completes an environmental monitoring system employing three satellites that cover most of China's territory. They will be used to monitor pollution and natural disasters and in making decisions about deploying emergency aid and reconstruction.

The Xinhua report said the launch took place at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, and the first two satellites were launched in September 2008.
