Salmonella Recall Hits Nestle's NESQUIK Powder

The company announced it Nov. 8, saying an ingredient supplier has recalled some lots of its calcium carbonate due to the possible presence of Salmonella.

Nestlé USA announced Nov. 8 it is voluntarily recalling "limited quantities" of Nestlé NESQUIK® Chocolate Powder distributed nationwide in 10.9, 21.8, and 40.7 ounce canisters. The voluntary recall is limited to NESQUIK Chocolate Powder, and no other varieties of NESQUIK powder or any sizes or flavors of NESQUIK ready-to-drink are affected by the recall.

Nationally distributed 40.7 ounce, 21.8 ounce, and 10.9 ounce lots of the product are being recalled. The recall was ordered because an ingredient supplier, Omya Inc., alerted the company that it has recalled certain lots of its calcium carbonate due to the possible presence of Salmonella. Calcium carbonate is an ingredient in NESQUIK; Nestlé USA's announcement said there have been no reports of illnesses or adverse health effects.

It says consumers should look on the bottom of the canister, adjacent to the consumer expiration date. All affected products have an expiration date of BEST BEFORE Oct 2014. Consumers who purchased it should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact Nestlé Consumer Services at 800-628-7679.

"Nestlé is dedicated to the health and safety of its consumers. For these reasons, the company initiated this voluntary recall," it states. "We apologize to our consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this incident."
