MSHA Releases Monthly Impact Inspection Results
Coal mine inspections for September produce 150 citations.
Every month, The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors across the nation visit coal mines to check compliance with MSHA safety standards. In the recently released September results, 150 citations and 10 orders were issued to the 16 mines inspected.
Three metal/nonmetal mines were inspected and 13 coal mines were inspected. Monthly inspections became standard in 2010 after an explosion at a mine.
The mines inspected in September were all locations that had compliance issues in the past.
A recent compliance criterion was the focus of these inspections.
“MSHA recently added a criterion to its impact inspection policy to emphasize the selection of mines that have had compliance issues related to respirable coal dust,” according to MSHA release.
Thus, to improve compliance with this standard, inspectors were instructed to focus on mines with this issue in the past.
