NSC's Second Century Under Way

The council already has begun collecting safety professionals' stories via a 100 Years of Safety website.

The yearlong "100 Years of Safety" celebration by the National Safety Council has begun, with the council collecting stories from safety professionals via a 100 Years website (http://www.nsc.org/nsc_events/100YearsofSafety/Pages/Home.aspx) even before the 2012 National Safety Congress and Expo began in Orlando, Fla.'s Orange County Convention Center this week.

The event is named "Celebration of the Century." It symbolizes the council's centennial -– a period during when the council estimates nearly 6 million lives have been saved through the efforts of people dedicated to safety and injury prevention.

"One hundred years ago, corporate leaders came together for the first Safety Congress and envisioned a national organization solely dedicated to the promotion of safety: the National Safety Council," Janet Froetscher, the council's president and CEO, says in a released posted at the site. "Over the past century, the National Safety Council has stayed true to its mission, and through the safety industry's combined efforts in education, advocacy, and compliance, we estimate nearly 6 million lives have been saved."

The council's centennial sponsors include Dow Chemical Company, ExxonMobil, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co., UL, Chrysler UAW, Georgia-Pacific/Koch Industries, PPL-Pennsylvania Power & Light, and URS.
