31st Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service Held
The names of 80 members of the fire service who died in 2011 and five from previous years were added to bronze plaques that surround the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Md., Oct. 7.
The 31st National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service took place Oct. 7 at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Md. The names of 80 firefighters who died in 2011 and five others from previous years were added to bronze plaques around the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial, and FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate joined U. S. Fire Administrator Ernest Mitchell, Jr. and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s board chairman of the Board, Chief Dennis Compton, to pay tribute to them.
According to USFA, 31 states and the territory of Guam lost firefighters in 2011. More than 6,000 people were expected to attend the service, including members of Congress, members of the fire service, and families, friends, and co-workers of the fallen firefighters.
