US Airways Fined $21,000 Following Crushing Fatality
ADOSH finds fault with US Airways after a baggage handler died in a conveyor belt accident.
The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health has fined US Airways $21,000 in response to the February death of one of the airline's employees. Robert Demarco, 60, was a baggage handler in Phoenix for the airline and was killed when he was attempting to remove baggage from a malfunctioning conveyor belt. He became stuck in the area between the upper and lower belts.
The enforcement agency found fault with the airline in relation to Demarco's and other employees' lack of training in how to shut down the conveyor belt properly.
US Airways received three fines from ADOSH inspectors in Arizona, each with a $7,000 penalty.
