Oregon OSHA Presents Workers' Memorial Scholarships
Seven students received them for the 2012-13 academic year during a Sept. 6 ceremony in Salem, Ore.
Oregon OSHA presented seven more Workers' Memorial Scholarships last week, with these aiding students for the 2012-13 academic year. The scholarships are awarded annually based on recommendations from OR-OSHA's Safe Employment Education and Training Advisory Committee to help in the post-secondary education of spouses or children of permanently and totally disabled or fatally injured workers.
The recipients are:
- Kelly Dewey of Hermiston, $750. She plans to attend Blue Mountain Community College and work toward a degree in elementary education.
- Diane Maldonado Dominguez, Wilsonville, $1,000. She is attending Portland State University and plans to become a medical doctor and use her bilingual skills abroad.
- Brittany Ford, Gresham, $1,500. She is a senior at Oregon State University studying to become a registered dietician. (This was Ford’s fourth Workers’ Memorial Scholarship.)
- Steven Hanners, Brookings, $750. He hopes to become a pharmacist and attend Southwestern Oregon Community College this fall.
- Marissa Parr, Jefferson, $1,000. She wants to earn a law degree and is currently studying anthropology and classics at Willamette University. (This was her second scholarship.)
- Andrea Webb, Eugene, $1,000. She attends the University of Oregon and wants to become a physician's assistant. (This was her second scholarship.)
- Ashley Yackamouth, Riddle, $,1000. She will attend Oregon State University this fall after two years at Umpqua Community College and is studying to become a physical therapist.
The scholarship money comes from interest earned on a fund derived from OR-OSHA civil fines and penalties. The program was created by state legislators in 1991 at the request of the Oregon AFL-CIO, with support from Associated Oregon Industries.
