Starbucks Pulls Business from Flavor Producer
Sensient Flavors is losing Starbucks as a client in light of a recent article citing major safety concerns.
Starbucks has pulled its business from Sensient Flavors after concerns about work safety have surfaced, and Campbell Soup may be next.
The Indianapolis flavor producer was the topic of an Aug. 19 article in the “The Indianapolis Star” exposing numerous safety concerns in the Sensient factory. Concerns range from hazardous chemical exposure to insufficient training.
The newspaper reported workers have been exposed to more than 400 times the safe amount of diacetyl, a chemical used in butter flavoring. It is linked to a dangerous lung condition.
Overall, Indiana OSHA has hit the company with 37 citations that will cost around $367,500 in addition to the loss of Starbuck’s business. Campbell is now reported to be reviewing its business with Sensient.
Currently, Sensient is contesting the citations and appealing to the state's Board of Safety Review.
