iPads Speeding License Renewals in Tennessee

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security said the 72 iPad kiosks installed at driver service centers statewide allow motorists to pay for new licenses and receive them within minutes.

Motorists in Tennessee who have to renew or replace driver's licenses may find the process faster and easier thanks to 72 iPad kiosks newly installed in 26 driver service centers by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. The kiosks, called ASSETS (automatic self-service electronic terminals), cost $79,200 and were bought to replace equipment that reached the end of its service life, the department announced.

"The iPads were ideal because of their smaller size and built-in touch screen keyboards. Additionally, the wireless capability makes the iPads accessible from any location inside the driver service center," its announcement said, adding that drivers can complete the transaction, pay for it with a credit or debit card, and receive the new license within minutes.

Motorists also change the address on an existing license and process reinstatement payments using the iPads, and soon they'll be able to use them to schedule road test appointments.

"Reducing the wait time at driver service centers is one of our top priorities. These self-service iPad stations will cut down on the number of customers waiting for service from a driver license examiner and will help reduce the overall wait time for all customers," Commissioner Bill Gibbons said.

The department also encourages citizens to renew driver's licenses online at www.tn.gov.
