Two Firefighters Died in Doha Mall Blaze

The Gulf Times reports a total of 19 people died in the fire inside the Villaggio mall.

Nineteen people died in the May 28 fire at the Gympanzee day care center inside Doha, Qatar's Villaggio shopping mall, including two firefighters from the Civil Defence team that responded, staff reporter Peter Townson of The Gulf Times reported May 29.

Fire and smoke prevented rescuers from using either of the Gympanzee's entrances to reach those inside, so they were forced to access the day care by cutting through its roof, according to his report, which said the responders cited a lack of floor plans and "malfunctioning safety systems" as "major hindrances to the rescue effort."

The Qatar News Agency reported a committee has been appointed to investigate the fire's causes and to report back in one week's time.
