NHTSA Sets May 18 Symposium on Lithium-Ion Batteries
The emphasis of this technical symposium in Washington, D.C., will be the safety of these batteries in electric vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will conduct a technical symposium on May 18 in Washington, D.C., to outline its current research on the safety of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. Presentations will be offered by the U.S. Department of Energy, voluntary standards bodies, and auto and battery manufacturers, according to NHTSA's April 23 notice of the free event, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT at DOT headquarters, 1200 New Jersey Ave. SE.

NHTSA has focused more attention of late to this battery technology because its use in motor vehicles is growing. It has worked with manufacturers to ensure they have appropriate post-crash protocols and has issued interim guidance for consumers, emergency responders, and tow truck operators, the notice states. It says NHTSA is conducting a Failure Analysis approach to help it identify problems with Li-ion batteries and the severity of their occurrence.
