HFES Participating in USA Science and Engineering Festival

The April 28-29 event in Washington, D.C., will feature 3,000 exhibits and stage demonstrations of everything from nanotechnology-enabled suits to a tool educating young computer users about correct posture.

Nanotechnology, biology, space sciences, robotics, oceanography and the science of severe weather -– these topics are some of the 15 tracks included in the interactive exhibits at the 2012 USA Science and Engineering Festival, which will take place April 28-29 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. It's a free, science- and engineering-promoting event for young people with support from numerous major companies, including Lockheed Martin, AT&T, Dow Chemical, and Microsoft.

Among the 3,000 exhibits and stage demonstrations in the expo will be Lockheed Martin demonstrations of a nanotechnology-enabled lab coat that repels fluids, an F-22 Cockpit Demonstrator, an exhibit explaining how best to recycle e-waste, robotics competitions, renewable energy devices developed in Antarctica, and many more.

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society also will have a booth that has been organized by the George Mason University Student Chapter and the Potomac Chapter. It will feature a driver distraction simulator developed by the student chapter, as well as good and bad product design, the science behind optical illusions, and a tool to educate young computer users about correct posture.

The event includes a science, technology, engineering, and math career pavilion and a large roster of science notables. They include Bill Nye the Science Guy and Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of the "MythBusters" TV show. Other national societies, universities, and federal laboratories and agencies also are participating in the festival.
