North Carolina DOL Accepting Safety Award Applications

The annual awards are available to business that had zero fatalities during 2011 at the site or location for which the award was given and an incidence rate at least 50 percent below the industry average.

The North Carolina Department of Labor has begun accepting applications from businesses that qualify for the Annual Safety Awards Program, which is open to private and public firms that had zero fatalities during 2011 at the site or location for which the award was given and an incidence rate at least 50 percent below their industry average. Applications are due by Feb. 15.

"A safety award shows employees and the community that you are committed to a safe work environment," Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry said. "A good safety record is something to be proud of, and businesses deserve to be recognized for their efforts."

Both gold and silver awards are presented. Gold is based on the DART rate, and Silver is based only on cases with at least one full day away from work, not including the day of the injury.

Award recipients are honored in their communities at safety awards banquets co-sponsored by the N.C. Department of Labor, local chambers of commerce, and other organizations.

The department has run this program since 1946. It also presents million hour safety awards to firms that accumulate a million employee hours with no injuries or illnesses involving days away from work. These can be presented during the local annual safety awards ceremony or at any time.
