$58,800 in Penalties Issued to Scranton Dunlop Inc.

OSHA's Wilkes-Barre, Pa. area office inspected the Scranton facility as part of the Site-Specific Targeting Program for industries with high injury and illness rates.

OSHA has cited Scranton Dunlop Inc., doing business as Sandone Tire, for 19 alleged violations, including four repeat violations, at its Scranton facility and has proposed $58,800 in penalties, the agency announced Jan. 30. The Wilkes-Barre, Pa. OSHA area office inspected it part of the agency's Site-Specific Targeting Program for industries with high injury and illness rates.

The repeat violations ($26,600 in penalties) include allegedly failing to ensure open-sided floors and/or platforms 4 feet or higher above the ground were guarded with standard railings and toe boards; employees were able to open an exit route door from the inside at all times without keys, tools, or special knowledge; pulleys with parts 7 feet or lower from the floor or work platform and horizontal belts were properly guarded; all pull boxes and fittings had proper covers; and face plates for snap switches mounted in boxes were installed. OSHA said this company was cited for the same violations in 2008.

Among the 11 serious violations ($32,200 in penalties) were items involving railings and other guards for stairways, not providing water sprinklers for a paint spray booth, not making portable fire extinguishers available and accessible, and not training workers on using fire extinguishers and forklifts. Four other-than-serious violations also were issued.
