Mayo Clinic Adjusts Mall of America Facility

Rechristened Mayo Clinic Healthy Living, the space that opened on Aug. 11, 2011, now offers a free wellness assessment and gaming kiosks to visitors.

The Mayo Clinic has made several changes to the facility it opened three months ago inside the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. Mayo announced it has expanded the range of clinical services offered there, is providing free wellness assessments and gaming kiosks, and has switched to the name Mayo Clinic Healthy Living to better reflect the facility’s emphasis on wellness and prevention.

The famous mall set a new record for Black Friday shoppers on Nov. 25 as 210,000 people came through its doors, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. The previous record, 200,000, was set a year earlier.

Mayo opened its facility there on Aug. 11 and says it may opt for a more permanent presence as part of a Phase II expansion of the mall. The mall currently attracts 40 million visitors annually –- far more than any other attraction in the state -– and its management has announced that it expects Phase II to lure an additional 20 million people per year.

The Mayo space (call 952-854-6996) is located on level one near the East Market Rotunda at the mall. The name and the services offered have been changed based on feedback from guests during its first 100 days of operation, according to the clinic's announcement.

"As we explore the potential for a more long-term presence at Mall of America, it has been vital to us to gather feedback from guests. It is important not only to gather feedback, but to implement changes based on that feedback," said David Hayes, M.D., a Mayo Clinic cardiologist who is leading the Mall of America project. "At Mayo Clinic the needs of the patient come first, and we want to apply that philosophy to guests at our space in Mall of America."
