UTC Fire & Security, Dow Chemical Win Top Awards

The 2011 Robert W. Campbell Award and the 2011 Green Cross for Safety Award winners were announced Oct. 31.

PHILADELPHIA -- Leaders of the National Safety Council announced the winners of their top annual awards for safety and health achievement, the 2011 Robert W. Campbell Award and the 2011 Green Cross for Safety, during opening ceremonies Oct. 31 at the National Safety Congress & Expo here. UTC Fire & Security won the Campbell, while the Dow Chemical Co. won the Green Cross award.

Jeffrey Woodbury, vice president of safety, security, health and environment for Exxon Mobil Corp. and an NSC board member, presented the Campbell award to Scott Buckhout, president of UTC Fire & Security. Woodbury said the award represents "a recognition of the paramount importance of safe operations" and credited UTC Fire & Security with implementing new prevention strategies and maintaining "relentless self-assessment" in pursuit of continuous improvement.

Dow Chemical representatives were present at the annoucement, but the Green Cross award presentation will take place in Spring 2012 at a Green Cross for Safety dinner.

DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman, who is a board member of both NSC and United Technologies, the Campbell winner's parent company, delivered the keynote address. "Safety in the 21st Century is not only transformative, but it's also inclusive and collaborative," she said. She noted that DuPont instituted its first safety regulations 200 years ago, in 1811, at its original gunpowder production site in Wilmington, Del.
