NSC Elects New Board Members

Four new members, including the CEO of United States Steel Corp., are beginning two-year terms.

PHILADELPHIA -- The National Safety Council announced that four new members were elected to its Board of Directors at the Oct. 30 annual meeting held here on the eve of the 2011 National Safety Congress & Expo. The four individuals beginning two-year terms are:

  • Daniel Frank, president, Wheels Services, at Wheels Inc.
  • Michael R. Gambrell, executive vice president of The Dow Chemical Company
  • John P. Surma, chairman and CEO of United States Steel Corp.
  • Jeffrey J. Woodbury, vice president, Safety, Security, Health and Environment, for Exxon Mobil Corp.

"The NSC board is pleased to welcome these gentlemen to our team," said Kent McElhattan, chairman of the board and also chairman of Industrial Scientific Corp. "The diverse experience and expertise they bring will surely be an asset to furthering the council's mission of saving lives and preventing injuries."

Frank joined Wheels Inc. in 1986. He holds a B.S. degree in engineering from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Stanford University.

Gambrell joined Dow in 1976 and has held leadership and executive leadership roles in both business portfolios and corporate functions. He holds a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Surma joined U.S. Steel in 2002 and was elected chairman of the board and CEO in 2006. He received a B.S. degree in accounting from Pennsylvania State University in 1976. Surma was appointed by President Barack Obama to the president's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiation and currently serves as vice chairman.

Woodbury was named VP for Safety, Security, Health and Environment for Exxon Mobil in July 2011. He has held various technical, planning, operations, and management positions in the United States and internationally. He holds bachelor's and M.S. degrees in petroleum engineering and is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
