FLETC Opens LEED-Silver Certified Dorm
The $34 million facility "will ensure our students have the best possible learning environment as they prepare to protect our homeland," said the organization's director, Connie Patrick.
A new $34 million dormitory recently opened at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Charleston, S.C., site, with FLETC Director Connie Patrick helping to cut the ribbon on the 141,185 square-foot building, which was built on the site of the former Charleston Naval Base. It received the LEED-Silver certification, which is the second tier of the four-level certification system.
The building will provide long-term housing for thousands of federal law enforcement officers and agents who attend training there. "This 400-room dormitory along the historic Cooper River will ensure our students have the best possible learning environment as they prepare to protect our homeland," said Patrick. "Using innovative design techniques, the project team not only saved money, but also enabled future savings by using energy-efficient and environmentally friendly design elements."
The site is one of three FLETC residential training sites in the United States and is also the home of the U.S. Coast Guard's Maritime Law Enforcement Academy, the U.S. Courts' Federal Probation and Pretrial Services Academy, and the dedicated training sites for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. State, local, campus, tribal, and international law enforcement agencies also send personnel to be trained at FLETC facilities. During FY 2010, more than 65,000 students trained at FLETC. The other two domestic training sites are in Artesia, N.M., and Glynco, Ga., which is the headquarters of FLETC.
