IKEA Pulls Wardrobe from EU Market

The Oct. 21 RAPEX bulletin says a heavy mirror can detach, fall, and break into shards. Twenty detachment reports and one case of severe cuts have been reported, it says.

IKEA has withdrawn a wardrobe from the European market because it poses a serious risk of injuries and cuts, according to the Oct. 21 bulletin from the European Union's RAPEX team. The furniture product includes a large, sliding mirror that is heavy and can detach and fall, creating sharp shards when it breaks, the bulletin states. It says 20 cases of detached mirrors and one case of severe cuts have been reported.

IKEA's recalls page asks customers who have an ELGÅ wardrobe with a FENSTAD sliding mirror door from supplier #12650 to contact its Exchange & Returns department or Customer Services immediately. Three suppliers make the product, but only supplier 12650's are being recalled, according to the company. The number is printed on the back of the door along with a Made in Sweden logo.

RAPEX is the EU rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products, except for food, pharmaceutical, and medical devices. The European Commission publishes a weekly overview of the dangerous products reported by national authorities.

The Oct. 21 bulletin also includes three glass oil lamps, two made in China and the third made in France, that have been voluntarily withdrawn from the market because they have no wick guard (in one case, there is a wick guard but it can easily detach), so 1) the lamps could overturn with or without oil inside, and 2) children could easily open them to drink the oil.
