Smyth Award Goes to Former Editor of AIHA Journal

Howard Cohen, Ph.D., MPH, CIH, will receive it at the 2011 Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene early next month.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association announced the 2011 recipient of the Henry F. Smyth, Jr. Award is Howard Cohen, Ph.D., MPH, CIH, who was editor-in-chief of the AIHA Journal from 1991 to 2003 and is currently a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.

Cohen also has served as the chair of the ANSI Z88.2 Committee on Respiratory Protection and the AIHA Committee on Respiratory Protection; has served as treasurer of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene; and is an AIHA Fellow.

He will be recognized as the award's recipient during the 2011 Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene (PCIH) that is being held Nov. 3-9 in Baltimore. The event is hosted by AIHA's Academy of Industrial Hygiene.

"The Smyth Award is reserved for honoring those members of the profession who have contributed not only to improving the practice of industrial hygiene, but in serving as an exemplary professional focused on improving the health and safety of workers," said Gayla McCluskey, CIH, CSP, ROH, QEP, president of the academy. "Dr. Cohen has served as editor-in-chief of AIHA's scientific journal and has many years of professional and academic practice. His teaching, research, and leadership make him an exemplary honoree."

Cohen is an associate professor (adjunct) at the Yale School of Medicine and professor emeritus of the University of New Haven, where he taught in the Occupational Safety and Health Management department.
