Academy of Industrial Hygiene Council Election Results Announced

AIHA said the four new officers will begin their terms at the academy’s annual business meeting following the Nov. 3-9 Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene in Baltimore.

The Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene (PCIH) taking place Nov. 3-9 will be a top-notch event, featuring talks by NIOSH Director Dr. John Howard, MD, MPH, and Rafael Moure-Eraso, Ph.D., CIH, chairman of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, on Nov. 7. John J. Resta, director of the Army Institute of Public Health, is the scheduled general session speaker the following day. Several sessions, workshops, and technical tours on both days were sold out as of Oct. 20.

The event includes an expo and features five tracks: leadership, public safety & health, stewardship & sustainability, exposure risk assessment & management, and interactive/dynamic activities.

At the Academy of Industrial Hygiene's business meeting following the PCIH, four newly elected officers of the academy’s executive council will begin their new terms. AIHA announced the election results this week:

  • Perry W. Logan, CIH, President
  • S.Z. (Zack) Mansdorf, Ph.D., CIH, CSP, QEP, President-elect
  • Lauralynn Taylor McKernan, ScD, CIH, Vice president
  • Gayla J. McCluskey, CIH, CSP, ROH, QEP, Past president

AIHA said McKernan is a newcomer to the council and is an environmental health officer in the U.S. Public Health Service who works for NIOSH as a research industrial hygienist. "She has conducted industrial hygiene field studies in a variety of occupations and has 20 peer-reviewed publications in topics ranging from diacetyl exposures, bioaerosols on commercial passenger aircraft, blood lead monitoring techniques and lessons learned from first responders," according to AIHA, which also reported that McKernan participated on the CDC response teams for Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. She received the 2011 AIHA Edward J. Baier Technical Achievement Award.

"The academy has always been fortunate to attract the best of the best in the profession to its leadership, and this year was no exception," said McCluskey. "We are extremely pleased to welcome a professional of Lauralynn Taylor McKernan's caliber to the Academy Executive Council."
