United Airlines Detroit Center Earns VPP Star

When the airline's Detroit Customer Contact Center received the Star Award from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Oct. 11, MIOSHA said this was the first United Airlines facility in any state to qualify for it.

Leaders of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) presented the Star Award, the most prestigious award it offers, to representatives of United Airlines' Detroit Customer Contact Center on Oct. 11.

"It is a distinct honor to welcome the United Airlines Detroit Customer Contact Center into this exceptional group of Michigan Star companies," said Steve Arwood, deputy director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, parent organization of MIOSHA. "Your corporate dedication to safety sends a strong message that focusing on worker safety is a sound business decision."

It is the first United Airlines facility in any state to qualify for the VPP Star Award, according to the state agency. MIOSHA Director Doug Kalinowski presented the MVPP Star Award to Beverly Barfield, director of Customer Contact Centers, and to the facility’s Safety and Health Committee. Employees of the center are represented by International Association of Machinists Local 141.

"We are very proud of the Detroit Customer Contact Center for their commitment to safety," said Michael Quiello, United Airlines' vice president of Corporate Safety Quiello. "The team in Detroit helps set an outstanding safety standard for the entire company. All injuries are preventable."

Since 1999, Michigan has recognized 27 MVPP Star companies.
