Forklift Emphasis Program Operating in Four States
OSHA's Region 4 announced the program began May 29 in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia and will end Sept. 30, unless it is extended.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has announced a new emphasis program that aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries involving powered industrial trucks at workplaces in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Georgia. The agency's Region 4 said the program began May 29 and will continue until Sept. 30, unless it is extended.
The agency said it wants to encourage employers to bring their facilities into compliance with OSHA's maritime, construction, and general industry standards.
"Powered industrial trucks are a significant source of serious and fatal injuries to workers," said Cindy Coe, OSHA's regional administrator in Atlanta. "Employers are responsible for ensuring that workers follow the proper safety procedures and for eliminating hazards from the workplace."
The program includes inspections primarily focused on the training received by operators, maintenance and repair, and the pathways traveled by forklifts, to ensure clear visibility and determine whether struck-by hazards exist.
