NRC Sets Closed Meeting on Spent Fuel Security Rules

The agency plans to issue new risk-informed, performance-based security regulations for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste storage facilities.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet July 26 with affected stakeholders to discuss vulnerability and threat information associated with its upcoming security regulations for facilities storing spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. The meeting will be closed because of the expected discussion of classified information, according to its notice.

The rule will revise 10 CFR Part 72, "Licensing Requirements for the Independent Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel, High-Level Radioactive Waste, and Reactor-Related Greater Than Class C Waste," and 10 CFR 73, "Physical Protection of Plants and Materials." NRC announced in December 2009 that it planned to issue the new risk-informed and performance-based security regulations.

The meeting will take place at NRC's offices in Rockville, Md.; attendees must register by July 12. For information, contact Dennis Andrukat in NRC's Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (phone 301-415-3561, e-mail [email protected]).

The notice says NRC ensures secure storage of these materials and the adequate protection of public health and safety and the common defense through a combination of security regulations and security orders to individual licensees.
