OSHA Training Module Targets Construction's 'Big 4'

The training packet includes instructor materials, student handouts, lesson tests, PowerPoint files, and an optional video about the four major hazards.

A training module that is mandatory for use in OSHA 10- and 30-hour construction outreach training has been made available by the OSHA Training Center in Dublin, Calif. The Construction Focus Four Module addresses the well-known leading causes of construction fatal injuries in construction: falls, electrocutions, caught-in or -between hazards, and struck-by hazards.

The training packet includes instructor materials, student handouts, lesson tests, PowerPoint files, and an optional Building and Construction Trades Department video, "Construction Safety: Choice or Chance" that can be used to begin the Focus Four section, according to the Training Packet.

More than half of federal OSHA's inspections are in the construction industry, which accounted for 816 on-the-job fatal injuries in 2009, the most among all industry sectors. Private-industry construction workers had a fatal occupational injury rate of 9.7 per 100,000 in 2009, nearly three times the rate for all U.S. workers.

The training materials were developed in an attempt to reduce these high numbers. The materials include detailed content in a participatory format for Authorized Outreach Trainers, thereby enhancing their effectiveness. For more information, visit OSHA's Focus Four Training Page.
