May 15 Reception Honors Dr. Jack Driscoll

He founded HNU Systems Inc. and commercialized the technology of photoionization in 1973 for field use by industrial hygienists.

A 6-7 p.m. reception on Sunday, May 15, at the Hilton Portland & Exec Towers, Galleria North, will honor Dr. Jack Driscoll, who founded HNU Systems Inc. and commercialized the technology of photoionization in 1973 for field use by industrial hygienists, later applying it to gas chromatography for laboratory-based applications. PID Analyzers, LLC (www.hnu.com) is sponsoring the event with the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society and AIHce.

The reception’s theme, "The Chemistry of Industrial Hygiene Instrumentation," was chosen because 2011 is the International Year of Chemistry. Driscoll is scheduled to speak about his work during the early 1970s, and the first photoionizer ever sold will be on display; it was donated back to PID when it was taken out of service by its owner after 25 years of use, according to Jennifer Maclachlan, PID Analyzers’ managing director.

Open to all 2011 AIHce attendees and exhibitors, local industrial hygienists, and local area chemists, the event also features two speakers: Geoff Hewitt of Ion Science Americas will discuss the history of photoionization and the early days at HNU Systems, and Phil Smith, Ph.D., CIH, of OSHA’s Salt Lake Technical Center will discuss the impact of photoionization-based instruments on the field of industrial hygiene.

To attend, RSVP to Maclachlan at [email protected].
