Two-Day San Francisco Forum Examines Seismic Risks
The event is scheduled to begin today with welcoming remarks from the mayors of San Francisco and Oakland.
The Hilton San Francisco Union Square is the setting for the May 2-3 Seismic Risk Mitigation Leadership Forum, a free, invitation-only event convening scientists, policy makers, and emergency planners to discuss community preparedness. A 90-minute session Monday afternoon will update attendees on the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and a session Monday evening is devoted to successful mitigation programs used by organizations in the western United States.
Tuesday's sessions will examine the sufficiency of building codes, protection of publicly owned facilities, and incentives for building owners; risks to low-income populations; post-earthquake fires; and how the general public can be motivated to participate in risk planning and mitigation strategies.
