NRC Meeting Monday on Security Rules
Facilities storing spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste soon will be complying with new security requirements to prevent sabotage.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding a meeting on Monday, half of it open to the public but the other half closed, to discuss comments received on its draft Security Requirements for Radiological Sabotage. The new requirements will apply to facilities storing spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste.
The afternoon session, where the commission will present information on independent spent fuel storage installation vulnerability studies and information on a proposed new regulatory guide, Draft Guide-5033, "Security Performance (Adversary) Characteristics for Physical Security Programs for 10 CFR PART 72 Licensees," will be closed.
10 CFR part 72 is "Licensing Requirements for the Independent Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel, High-Level Radioactive Waste, and Reactor-Related Greater Than Class C Waste." Also amended by the new requirements will be 10 CFR part 73, "Physical Protection of Plants and Materials."
NRC has been working on this for some time; the commission published the draft and asked for comments in December 2009.
