Minimum-Security Prison Joins OR-OSHA SHARP
The 260-bed Shutter Creek Correctional Institution in North Bend, Ore., is staffed by 110 employees and contractors.
The Shutter Creek Correctional Institution, a 260-bed minimum-security prison, is the latest employer to join Oregon OSHA's Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP), OR-OSHA announced April 18.
SHARP participants have a limited exemption from programmed inspections. Any type or size of Oregon business that has been operating for more than a year is eligible to apply for it. The agency says the ultimate goal of SHARP is to encourage employers to become self-sufficient in managing workplace safety and health issues; about 70 employer sites now are participating, and more than 90 have graduated from the program.
Shutter Creek Correctional Institution was an Air National Guard radar station before being converted to a prison in 1990. It is staffed by 110 employees and contractors who provide supervision, programming, and support for general population inmates and inmates in an Alternative Incarceration Program. "The SHARP certification recognizes our staff for their dedication and hard work to ensure a safe and hazard free work environment," said SCCI Superintendent Tim Causey. "The program has helped us re-emphasize our commitment to practicing safe work habits on a daily basis."
