"Safety is NO Accident: Live Injury-Free" is the theme of NPHW 2011.

Health Groups Focus NPHW on Injuries, Violence

The American Public Health Association kicked off National Public Health Week on April 4 with its first-ever Twitter conversation about preventing both.

National Public Health Week 2011 takes place April 4-10, with a long list of public health departments, universities, national associations, and other organizations joining to encourage Americans to prevent injuries and violence.

NPHW has been celebrated since 1995, but this year's week began with something new: the American Public Health Association's first-ever Twitter conversation. The topic was violence and injury prevention, and the chat began at 1 p.m. EDT on Monday, April 4, at http://twitter.com/nphw/, hashtag #NPHW.

"Together, we can help Americans live injury-free in all areas of life: at work, at home, at play, in your community and anywhere people are on the move," APHA says in NPHW promotional material. "We all need to do our part to prevent injuries and violence in our communities. Join us as we work together to create a safer and healthier nation."

The Safety Tips tab on the week's website offers guidance for increasing safety in each of these locations. Two APHA leaders -- Executive Director Dr. Georges C. Benjamin and President Dr. Linda Rae Murray -- are visiting seven states April 4-7 as part of the Injury Prevention Road Tour.
