NYC Firefighters Make a Hot Safety Video

Ten members of the New York City Fire Department joined the Flying Karamazov Brothers last month to film the educational video titled "Safety's Hot, Fire's Not."

The New York City Fire Department is a big, busy outfit, with boxing and hockey teams, an active fire safety awareness and smoke alarm program, and much more going on. FDNY and the city's fire commissioner, Salvatore J. Cassano, are also preparing for the 2011 New York World Police and Fire Games beginning in August.

Last month, 10 members of the department joined the Flying Karamazov Brothers to make an educational fire safety video titled "Safety's Hot; Fire's Not." The Brothers are four expert jugglers and entertainers -- Paul Magid, Mark Ettinger, Roderick Kimball, and Stephen Bent. They were joined in the four-minute video by FDNY Capt. Sean Giery, EMS Capt. Dawn Diaz, Lt. Anthony Mancuso, Lt. John Erico, FF Frank Pizarro, FF Regina Wilson, FF Danny Glover, FF William Arce, Paramedic Farooq Muhammad, and retired FF Gerald Claxton.

"This is a fun way to learn about fire safety," Pizarro said during rehearsals at the Minetta Lane Theatre in Manhattan on Feb. 15, according to the department's news release. "And the more you know, the better."

The video addresses fire safety rules, smoke alarms, cooking safety, and space heaters. It will be featured on the FDNY YouTube channel and other websites this spring and will be broken up into smaller public service announcements.
