Oberstar Being Honored at 2011 TRB Annual Meeting

His congressional career ends this month. Oberstar, a Minnesota Democrat, has chaired the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and has been a strong proponent of increased highway funding.

The Transportation Research Board will honor U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., during the Chairman's Luncheon at its 90th Annual Meeting next month in Washington, D.C. As many as 10,000 transportation professionals are expected to attend the annual meeting, which will take place Jan. 23-27 at three hotels -- the Marriott Wardman Park, Omni Shoreham, and Washington Hilton.

Oberstar, whose 36-year career in Congress ends this month, has chaired the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He will receive the 2010 George S. Bartlett Award in recognition of "his tireless work to improve safety and efficiency for the traveling public, and for his championship of increased investment in the nation's highway and transportation infrastructure throughout his long career," according to TRB, which is one of six major divisions of the National Research Council.

The annual meeting will focus on livable communities and transportation planning amid continuing financial uncertainty. More than 600 sessions are on the agenda.

Oberstar's Dec. 14 farewell speech to the House of Representatives (he's introduced by Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn.) is available here on YouTube.
