Four Fireworks Firms Paying $100,000 for Imported Products
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the companies knowingly imported more than 200,000 consumer fireworks from December 2006 to September 2007 that were banned hazardous substances because they contained too much pyrotechnic material.
Four companies -- Jake's Fireworks Inc. of Pittsburg, Kansas, and its affiliated companies Far East Imports Inc. and Wholesale Fireworks Enterprises LLC, of Pittsburg; and Pacific Northwest Fireworks Inc. of Aberdeen, Wash. -- have agreed to pay a $100,000 civil penalty for importing consumer fireworks that didn't meet federal regulations.
They imported more than 200,000 consumer fireworks from December 2006 to September 2007 that contained too much pyrotechnic material, according to CPSC.
CPSC held and tested the fireworks as they were entering the United States and found they contained too much of the pyrotechnic composition used to create the audible blast, making them dangerous if they were exploded unexpectedly at ground level, according to the agency.
The settlement agreement says the companies deny violating the Federal Hazardous Substance Act. It says they are jointly and severally liable for paying the $100,000 within 20 days after being served with the commission's final order.
