PAHO 2011 Administration Award Nominations Due March 31

An important award for health promotion since its introduction in 1969, the Award for Administration most recently was given to a Honduran for her work against communicable diseases.

Dr. Elsa Yolanda Palou of Honduras received the Pan American Health Organization 2010 Award for Administration.Dr. Elsa Yolanda Palou of Honduras received the Pan American Health Organization's 2010 Award for Administration six months ago for her administrative, medical, teaching, and research activities to improve the quality of care for patients with communicable diseases, especially people living with HIV/AIDS. Now, PAHO is seeking nominations for the 2011 award.

It was created in 1969 by Dr. Stuart Portner, former chief of administration of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau. The award recognizes someone who has made a significant contribution in his or her home country and in the Americas to improving health development through the management or execution of services and programs, teaching, and research. The winner receives a diploma and $5,000.

PAHO says the award inspires continued development of leadership in health and promotes the improvement in the management of national health systems and services. Nominations for the 2011 award are due by March 31, 2011, and must be submitted by the member governments of PAHO through their ministries of health.
