Tom Phillips, chair of the Safe Work Australia Council, received the Ian Chisholm Award on Oct. 7 in Sydney at the 18th annual National Safety Awards of Excellence presentation held by the National Safety Council of Australia and GIO, one of Australia's major insurance companies.

The Chisholm award is given to an Australian who has made an outstanding contribution to the cause of occupational health, safety, and environment beyond his or her own workplace. Phillips received it this year for leading the development of the national health and safety laws being implemented by December 2011, with the Model Work Health and Safety Act serving as the first key milestone. Phillips is a former executive in the Australian automotive industry, including five years as managing director and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Australia Ltd.

On Oct. 14, Safe Work Australia will launch a new website at www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au that will offer better search capability, a national events calendar, a better publications section, and an RSS news feed.
