Workshop to Investigate Impacts of Indoor Air Contaminants, Lead Paint

The Houston Chapter of the Indoor Air Quality Association will host a half-day workshop July 30 in Houston with presentations focusing on indoor air contamination and new rules revolving around lead paint.

Dan Bridge, Ph.D., CIH, LEED® AP, will present “Investigating Content Damage from Indoor Air Contamination,” a session focused on the many types of airborne contaminants that every year cause thousands of dollars of loss in commercial buildings and residences and otherwise damage contents and interior surfaces while also creating the potential for ill health effects. Contaminants include soot, chemical cleaning agents, pesticides, smoke, mold, airborne particulates, and sewage. Bridge will address how air quality investigators often are asked to determine which contaminant caused specific damage, as well as the extent of the damage. He will use case studies to review investigation objectives, sample collection methods, laboratory testing procedures, and performance data analysis to form summary conclusions.

Roland Cain, owner of Biosphere Consultants, will present “EPA’s Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule – The Impact of Lead,” examining the measures the agency promulgated April 22, 2010. Cain, a state-certified lead risk assessor, will offer his perspective on the new challenge related to old lead paint, which can create hazardous dust -- harmful to adults and children -- when disturbed by common renovation activities. The session will focus on EPA’s rule requiring that contractors be certified before performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that can disturb lead-based paint. As Cain will note, failure to follow the recent rules can result in contractors facing fines up to $37,500 per violation per day, with similar fines extending to other areas where children are present.

The workshop will take place in the Houston Room, located on the 10th floor of the Conference Center, 5555 San Felipe, in Houston. Registration includes a continental breakfast that begins at 8:20 a.m. CDT. The presentations, with breaks for networking, last through noon. Reservations are required for the event and must be in by 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 28. Cost is $50 for IAQA members, $75 for others.
