Executive Summit on Tap Tomorrow

BALTIMORE – Wednesday all but wraps up Safety 2010, the American Society of Safety Engineers’ annual conference & expo here this week. It’s the last day for keynote speeches and the concurrent educational sessions offered in 20 tracks ranging from construction safety to business skills and fundamentals offered in Spanish. Sessions in a new track this year, one that is titled Executive, explores C-suite issues such as culture change, corporate social responsibility, and achieving leadership skills.

An executive summit starting at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday is a great fit for the Executive track and for many of this meeting’s attendees. Two executives, one from the federal government and the other from the private sector, are the panel’s headliners, and they will lead a discussion about senior managers’ views on the importance of employee safety and health and also the expectations of business leaders for their OSH professionals.

The two are Olga M. Dominguez, assistant administrator for the Office of Infrastructure at NASA, and Bill Ermatinger, vice president of Human Resources and Administration at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. Ermatinger is responsible for environmental, health, safety and community relations functions at his company’s facilities in Newport News, Va. Dominguez also has experience managing environmental programs at NASA and the U.S. Navy.

NASA is winding down its space shuttle program and preparing for a new, as-yet-uncertain era. Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, part of a Los Angeles-based company with 120,000 employees, is the leading manufacturer of military vessels. The company hosted a groundbreaking ceremony June 8 in Pascagoula, Miss., for a new maritime trades academy to help current shipbuilding workers upgrade their skills and new generations of workers learn the trade.
