Baltimore is Ground Zero for Safety this Week

Safety, health, and environmental professionals from all industries and more than 36 countries are here at the Baltimore Convention Center for the American Society of Safety Engineers’ annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition, better known this year as “Safety 2010.” The Expo part of the show began yesterday and will continue through tomorrow. The Conference will continue through Wednesday.

Throughout this week Safety 2010 will feature more than 200 educational sessions, issue roundtables, programs in Spanish, an executive track, a fundamentals program and speakers from major corporations and government organizations such as NASA and the U.S. Department of Labor. In addition, this year’s event is laying claim to the largest exposition ASSE has ever offered, with more than 400 exhibitors. Products featured at the exhibition include alarm and signaling devices, auto safety devices, biological detection devices, maintenance materials and devices, computer services, signage, drug testing, education and training aids, emergency aids, ergonomics, personal protective equipment, and much more.

The conference’s keynote speakers include: Andrew Winston, author of the book The Green Recovery and co-author of the bestselling book Green-to-Gold; Geoffrey Colvin, author of the book The Upside of the Downturn – Management Strategies to Prevail in the Recession and Thrive in the Aftermath, and editor at large for FORTUNE Magazine; and, luncheon speaker Joe Malarkey, presenting “Choose to Lose,” an offbeat program about the opportunities that are hidden in adversity.

This year’s executive summit panel, open to all attendees, on Wednesday, June 16, at 7:45 a.m., will feature senior-level management in a discussion on the importance of employee safety and health, as well as expectations of business and industry leaders on the role of SH&E professionals. Executives include NASA Chief of Safety and Mission Assurance Bryan O’Connor, Bill Ermatinger of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Kathleen Shanahan of WRScompass, Daniel Nobbe of Fiberteq, and Gregory Hale of Disney Parks and Resorts.
