DOL Grant Anticipates Space Shuttle Layoffs
The $15 million grant will help about 3,200 contract workers find new jobs after the shuttle program ends later this year.
The U.S. Department of Labor is providing a $15 million grant to help about 3,200 contract workers at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida find new jobs after NASA's space shuttle program ends. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced the grant during a visit last week. The workers are employed by ASRC Aerospace Corp., Boeing, United Space Alliance, and other contractors.
“During nearly three decades of continuous space shuttle flights, these dedicated and talented workers have helped move our nation and the world as a whole forward in a broad range of disciplines,” said Solis. “Today, these hard-working Americans need and deserve our support, and I am pleased that this grant will allow them to upgrade their skills further and gain access to work opportunities in high-demand industries.”
The grant to The Brevard Workforce Development Board Inc. will fund career guidance assistance, training, job search skills training, resume review, and more. It is one of the National Emergency Grants from the secretary’s discretionary fund; visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG for more information.
