Engineer Who Rebuilt Afghan Roads Remembered

Engineering News-Record posted an obituary June 2, only the latest tribute to James S. "Jim" Myers, who is credited with completing the vital Ring Road in Afghanistan under extremely challenging conditions.

James S. "Jim" Myers, former senior engineer at The Louis Berger Group Inc., brought in a difficult road construction project ahead of schedule almost a decade ago, and he did it in a foreign war zone with challenges domestic project managers never experience.

Myers died May 13 of natural causes in Northport, Wash., according to numerous tributes posted by Engineering News-Record magazine, USAID's Afghanistan Infrastructure and Rehabilitation Program, the Statesman-Examiner newspaper of Colville, Wash., and others.

The Berger Group has a Kabul office and has worked extensively on Afghan infrastructure projects since 9/11 in support of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), managing, designing, and building roads, dams, highways, irrigation projects, and public buildings. The company's online Afghanistan page says its projects there have employed more than 25,000 Afghans since 2002.
