Maytag Recalls 1.7 Million Dishwashers

Twelve reports of fires and damage resulting from the appliances’ heating element prompt a major voluntary recall.

Maytag Corp. and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of 1.7 million of the manufacturer’s dishwashers Thursday, saying the heating element in them “can pose a serious fire hazard.”

Maytag said it has received 12 reports of fires or damage, including one report of extensive fire damage in a kitchen. No one has been reported injured. The recall includes Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag, and Crosley brand dishwashers with plastic tubs that were sold in department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from February 2006 through April 2010 at prices between $250 and $900.

Consumers are asked to stop using the recalled units immediately, disconnect the electrical supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it, and contact Maytag at 800-544-5513 or by visiting www.repair.maytag.com. A free in-home repair will be provided, or the owner may receive a $150 rebate if he or she buys one of several specific new Maytag stainless steel tub dishwashers.
