What could be greener than a May visit to Oregon’s City of Roses, named America’s greenest metropolitan area in March 2010 by American City Business Journals and the second-most bike-friendly U.S. city in April 2010 by Bicycling magazine?
The 2011 American Industrial Hygiene Conference & Expo will take place May 14-19, 2011, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland in conjunction with the 2nd International Symposium on Wood Dust (May 17-18). Symposium sponsors include NIOSH, AIHA, the American Forest & Paper Association, and CPWR -- the Center for Construction Research and Training.
Portland’s natural beauty is breathtaking –- the surrounding area is filled with gardens, waterfalls, and towering trees, and white-capped Mount Hood shines off in the distance to the east. Powell’s City of Books at 1005 W. Burnside is a landmark for bibliophiles and claims to be the world’s largest used and new bookstore.
Portland celebrates conservation and environmental stewardship. The city’s Bureau of Planning and Sustainability held the 18th annual Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow (BEST) awards breakfast on April 20, 2010, with Mayor Sam Adams doing the honors as seven local businesses received awards. And the city’s Bureau of Environmental Services offered incentives of up to $5 per square foot this year for residents to install new ecoroofs as part of Portland’s Grey to Green effort, which aims to add 43 new acres of these vegetated roof systems by 2013 to increase Portland’s green stormwater management infrastructure, protect sensitive natural areas, and improve habitat. Applications for this cycle of ecoroof incentives are due by June 1.
