International Flavor Spices Up AIHce 2010

DENVER -- The global nature of industrial hygiene was prominent on Monday as the 2010 American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo opened here in the Mile High City. A morning program titled International Globalization brought major issues to the fore, with presenters discussing the REACH European system for classifying chemicals of concern and educating workers about them; workers’ exposure monitoring in the global footwear industry; and the demand and opportunities for OSH education in Egypt, presented by a speaker from NIOSH and a consultant from Cairo.

One of the exhibitor demonstrations at 11:30 a.m. featured portable detectors used in series to detect CH4, NO, NO2, and SO2 inside Chinese coal mines. A health care program with six papers included one from a medical operation in Abu Dhabi, one from Canada, and another from Hong Kong.

A four-hour respiratory protection program that filled the afternoon was scheduled to include a presentation on determining exhaled aerosols by four experts from the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, and two researchers from the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Taipei.

AIHA, which co-sponsors this conference with the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, extended one of its international efforts on April 20 when it signed an agreement with National Safety Council (NSC) India that renewed their September 2007 Memorandum of Understanding calling for their technical cooperation and exchanges.

The agreement includes:

  • allowing each other to publish copyrighted articles and publications
  • sharing educational and training opportunities within the organizations
  • participating in organization-sponsored conferences
  • working to advance IH practice in India through professional certification, laboratory accreditation, and proficiency testing.

NSC India will help to promote attendance to AIHA’s Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene program in India. AIHA will offer NSC India members a discounted member rate and provide NSC India with electronic access to The Synergist and Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (JOEH).

AIHA President Cathy Cole, CIH, CSP, and NSC India Director General V.B. Sant signed the memorandum.
