Former DOL Secretary Herman to Give World Workplace Keynote

The 2010 IFMA conference will take place in late October at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Alexis Herman, who was secretary of Labor during Bill Clinton's administration, is the keynote speaker.

This year's World Workplace Conference & Expo from IFMA, the International Facility Management Association, will celebrate IFMA's 30th anniversary and also feature an interesting keynote speaker: Alexis Herman, who was U.S. secretary of Labor from May 1, 1997, to Jan. 20, 2001, during Bill Clinton's second term as president. Her tenure ended with OSHA's promulgation of an ergonomics regulation that Congress and the incoming president, George W. Bush, quickly repealed.

Herman's speech, sponsored by AT&T, is scheduled to take place Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. According to IFMA, Herman is now chair and CEO of a company named New Ventures LLC, chair of the Toyota Diversity Advisory Board and the Sodexho Business Advisory Board, and a board member of Cummins Inc., Entergy Inc., MGM Mirage, and The Coca-Cola Co.

The event takes place Oct. 27-29 and is a big event for facility managers.

June 4 is the entry deadline for IFMA's Awards of Excellence, which are awarded in 18 categories, including the Emerging Leader Award, Chapter of the Year Award, and Distinguished Member Award. Entries should cover activities from May 1, 2009, through April 30, 2010. Nominations may be submitted only by IFMA members in good standing. A nomination package for each award category is available at www.ifma.org/events/aoe.
