Don Osterberg

Schneider National VP to Receive Safety Leadership Award

Don Osterberg, vice president of Safety, Security & Driver Training for Schneider National Inc., will receive the Truck Safety Coalition's first-ever Distinguished Safety Leadership award during a May 11 reception at the Sleep Apnea & Trucking Conference in Baltimore.

Event organizers say the inaugural award and this year's recipient are special because the Truck Safety Coalition is dedicated to reducing truck-related crashes, providing support to truck crash survivors and families of truck crash victims, and educating the public, policy-makers, and media about truck safety issues. FMCSA Administrator Anne Ferro and NTSB Vice Chair Christopher Hart are among the presenters at the sold-out meeting.

More than 400 attendees are expected at the conference, with representatives from trucking, insurance/risk management, occupational health, and health care, including sleep medicine. Those unable to attend can purchase the Resource Toolkit, a comprehensive manual with materials on sleep apnea and trucking, which will be available after the conference at www.satc2010.org.

Based in Green Bay, Wis., Schneider National is a multi-national trucking company with services spanning logistics, supply chain logistics management, transportation logistics, and related services. The company takes a proactive approach to the leadership of safety and regulatory compliance, embracing many initiatives for which FMCSA has been an advocate. On its Web site, the company notes its commitment to safety by employing electronic logging/electronic onboard recorders in its fleet and using hair follicle drug testing for drivers. All Schneider National drivers also receive simulation-based training and quarterly sustainment training and have fatigue management programs as well as a sleep disorder screening and treatment program as part of their regimen.
