New Members, Chairman for NACOSH

Michael Silverstein, M.D., MPH, assistant director of Washington state's Division of Occupational Safety and Health, is the new chairman.

Seven new members have joined the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH), including a new chairman, Michael Silverstein, and two highly experienced safety leaders from organized labor, Margaret "Peg" Seminario of the AFL-CIO and Bill Borwegen of the Service Employees International Union. Announced Monday by the Labor Department, the new appointees will serve two-year terms.

The new members are:

Public representatives:

  • Michael Silverstein, M.D., MPH, assistant director of Washington state's Division of Occupational Safety and Health, who will serve as committee chair
  • Linda Rae Murray, M.D., MPH, chief medical officer, Cook County (Ill.) Department of Health

Management representative:

  • Joseph Van Houten, Ph.D., senior director, Worldwide EHS, Johnson & Johnson

Labor representatives:

  • Margaret Seminario, MS, director, Safety and Health, AFL-CIO
  • William Borwegen, MPH, director, Occupational Health and Safety, Service Employees International Union CTW, CLC

Safety representative:

Health representative:

  • Susan Randolph, M.S.N., RN, COHN-S, clinical assistant professor, Occupational Health Nursing Program, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, who was reappointed for a second term

The committee has 12 members, eight of whom are selected by the secretary of Labor. Four are chosen by the secretary of Health and Human Services. It meets at least twice a year.
