Young Worker Video Contest Down to Seven Finalists

Oregon high school students submitted nearly 50 videos in the second annual contest. Winners will be screened at a Salem theater April 10.

A group of organizations that includes Oregon OSHA and the Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition received nearly 50 entries in the second annual "Save a Friend. Work Safe" video contest for high school students, and now seven finalists have been selected. The sponsors are asking the public to rate the finalists after viewing them on YouTube.

The seven include depictions of construction prank, injuries resulting from a young worker's failure to pay attention to her safety training, an accidental cut occurring in a fast-food kitchen, and a request for help that results in a serious fall. The three winners will receive cash prizes ranging from $300 to $500 plus a matching amount for their schools. The Oregon Young Employee Safety Coalition, Oregon OSHA, SAIF Corporation, the American Society of Safety Engineers, and DHS-Public Health Division, Occupational Public Health Program are the contest's sponsors.

The contest was designed to create awareness about occupational safety among young people; the invitation was to create a 45-second public service announcement based on:

  • The risks of practical jokes in the workplace
  • The risks of repeated lifting and carrying
  • The benefits of being trained for every job task

Contest winners will be unveiled at an April 10 screening at Northern Lights Theater in Salem at 1:30 p.m. For details about the contest, go to www.orosha.org/psacontest/.
