Exelon Nuclear Wins NSC's 2010 Green Cross Medal

The company, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corp., operates 17 reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey that represent about 20 percent of the U.S. nuclear industry's power capacity. The Green Cross for Safety Dinner will be held May 13 in Chicago.

The National Safety Council has awarded its 2010 Green Cross for Safety Medal to Exelon Nuclear, one of the largest U.S. operators of nuclear power plants. The company, a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corp., operates 17 reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey that represent about 20 percent of the U.S. nuclear industry's power capacity -- enough to power 17 million homes.

The medal is presented annually to an organization "that has distinguished itself over a period of years for outstanding achievements in workplace and off-the-job safety and health, community service, environmental stewardship and responsible citizenship," according to the council, which will host its annual Green Cross for Safety Dinner on May 13 at The Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier in Chicago. The dinner is the council's largest annual fundraising event. The council is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.

Companies nominated for the aware are expected to provide data including all recordable and lost-time incident rates for previous five years; fatalities, multiple serious cases, or disasters during the same period; and other key performance indicators. A questionnaire gather additional details from company leaders, who are asked how they assess the company's safety and health culture and encourage senior executives to be actively engaged in SH&E.
