Strong Interest in New ANSI/ASSE Construction Standards

Tim Fisher, ASSE's director of Practices and Standards, said ASSE is developing technical briefs for ANSI/ASSE A10.47-2009, "Work Zone Safety for Highway Construction," and ANSI/ASSE A10.16-2009.

Tim Fisher, ASSE's director of Practices and Standards, has alerted members of the SAFETY listserv that ASSE is developing technical briefs on two highly popular new construction standards: ANSI/ASSE A10.47-2009, "Work Zone Safety for Highway Construction," which was approved Nov. 24, 2009, and is effective Feb. 24, 2010; and ANSI/ASSE A10.16-2009, "Safety Requirements for Tunnels, Shafts and Caissons," approved Nov. 10, 2009, and effective Feb. 10, 2010.

"We have had literally a ton of requests for information about the release of the two new ANSI/ASSE A10 Standards (A10.16 and A10.47). We are putting together some tech briefs on them, which should also assist those SH&E Pros with an interest," Fisher wrote.

The A10.47 standard is a comprehensive consensus standard that addresses traffic control, flaggers' safety, preventing runover and backover incidents, lockout/tagout safety and rollover prevention for equipment operators, excavations, electrical safety of underground utilities and overhead power lines, power tool guarding and vibration, fall prevention, materials handling, health hazards, nighttime illumination, paving operations, and PPE. This standard references 11 other ANSI standards on apparel, gloves, head protection, and more; as well as 29 CFR 1926, the OSHA construction standards, and ASTM F2413, a standard setting performance requirements for protective footwear.

The committee that developed it includes representatives of dozens of organizations, including the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), Associated Builders and Contractors, Associated General Contractors of America, DuPont, IBEW, the International Safety Equipment Association, the Laborers' International Union of North America, National Association of Home Builders, National Roofing Contractors Association, NIOSH, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, among others.
