CDC Injury Center's Acting Director to Retire

Louise Galaska is retiring effective Jan. 1, 2010, after a career of almost 32 years working at CDC and in public health.

Louise Galaska, acting director of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, will retire effective Jan. 1, 2010, CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, M.D., MPH, announced in an e-mail to employees Monday. That means the center's Director's View blog will soon be under new management for the second time this year. Galaska herself has contributed a few posts to the blog after taking over for Dr. Ileana Arias.

Galaska, MPA, has worked at CDC and in public health for almost 32 years, Frieden wrote. He said her program experiences have ranged from cancer to sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, TB, and environmental health, adding, "Her clear thinking, management skills and willingness to step up to a challenge will be missed."

A national search to fill the director's post is expected to begin in January, according to the announcement distributed by CDC. Robin Ikeda, M.D., MPH, will be acting director of NCIPC while continuing as acting deputy director for Non-communicable Diseases, Injury and Environmental Health, Frieden wrote. From April 2006 to September 2009, Ikeda was associate director for Science at NCIPC.
